Embracing the Living Building Challenge on Arup Perth Workplace fitout
Built was proud to collaborate on the construction of the fitout for Arup’s Perth Workplace, for which Arup recently received the Interior Design Sustainability Award at the Architecture and Design 2024 Sustainability Awards.
The Arup Perth Workplace project is pursuing the Living Building Challenge (LBC) – a globally recognised certification from the International Living Futures Institute that sets the highest standard for environmentally responsible and regenerative construction.
Embracing the LBC means adopting a holistic and transformative approach to construction: it requires innovative design, advanced technologies, and a commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
“The Living Building Challenge represents the pinnacle of sustainable construction. Collaborating with partners like Arup will help make it standard,” said Jake Richards, Project Manager, Built.
“The whole intent of the Living Building Challenge is to positively impact the community, the location, what could have been if there wasn’t a structure or a building on top of it,” he added.
To achieve certification, a building must operate for 12 consecutive months, demonstrating net-positive energy, water neutrality, and adherence to strict environmental and ethical criteria.
Built, as the builder, faced the challenge of sourcing sustainable materials, implementing innovative energy and water systems, and ensuring the well-being of occupants.
By Built undertaking the LBC, alongside Arup, the project committed to meeting a set of rigorous performance requirements organised into seven performance areas, or “Petals” – including Site, Water, Energy, Health, Materials, Equity, and Beauty.
The LBC not only promotes sustainability but also encourages us to think beyond conventional practices, fostering a shift toward regenerative and restorative building practices.
Arup’s Perth Workplace is situated in Westralia Square 2 (WS2) – Perth’s first hybrid timber office tower, that Built recently delivered.
