Construction Underway at Barwon Women’s and Children’s
Main works have now begun at the Barwon Women’s and Children’s, the $500 million+ project that will transform maternity, paediatric, and neonatal services for families in the Geelong region.
Built has been appointed as the construction partner, working alongside the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA), Barwon Health, and Lyons Architecture, to deliver Geelong’s biggest health infrastructure project.
.
To mark the state of main works, Minister for Health Infrastructure Melissa Horne, Member for Geelong Christine Couzens, Member for Lara Ella George and Member for Bellarine Alison Marchant attended a sod turning ceremony onsite to celebrate this significant milestone.
Once complete, the new facility will increase hospital capacity and allow Barwon Health to provide expanded women’s and children’s healthcare services, including additional inpatient beds, birthing suites, operating theatres, and dedicated outpatient clinics.
The project will also include a new neonatal and parent care unit, ensuring families can stay together while their baby receives critical care, along with an expanded special care nursery to support newborns in their first weeks and months.
Beyond healthcare improvements, Barwon Women’s and Children’s is a major economic driver, creating approximately 1,500 jobs throughout construction, with up to 450 workers onsite at peak times.
The hospital’s design has been shaped by extensive community consultation, with over 600 ideas contributed to ensure the facility reflects the needs of families across Geelong, the Surf Coast, and the Bellarine Peninsula.
Construction is set for completion in 2029, enabling families in the region have access to world-class healthcare, closer to home.
