Celebrating construction excellence in Western Australia
Congratulations to our Western Australian team for winning three awards at the Master Builders Western Australia 2024 Excellence in Construction Awards.
These awards showcase and reward members for demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship, commitment to building excellence, and upholding the highest professional standard.
Our Waterfront Cottesloe – Stage 1BC project for Curtin Heritage Living received the award for Best Historic Restoration or Renovation. We also won the award for Best Seniors/Aged Persons Multi Unit Development for the Curtin Heritage Living Marine Parade site. Additionally, our Westralia Square 2 project was celebrated with the award for Best Office Building.
“A huge congratulations to everyone in the business who contributed to these projects. In particular, the project teams deserve special recognition for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to quality that has been crucial to the success of these projects,” said Shane Palfrey, Construction Manager, Built.
Best Historic Restoration or Renovation, $50m-$100m: Waterfront Cottesloe Redevelopment Project – Stage 1BC
Our Waterfront Cottesloe – Stage 1BC project for Curtin Heritage Living was rewarded for its extensive and meticulous renovation of the Ministering Children’s League (MCL) convalescent home, a landmark state heritage building located on the Cottesloe waterfront.
The works included structural rectification and strengthening works to comply with current building codes created by the change of building use, re-creating the statement “pepper pot” roof, and the high-quality fitout of internal spaces including a theatre, clubroom, and artist’s “maker’s space”, to promote community activation.
Overcoming major challenges to the structural integrity of the heritage building, the restoration was a collaborative effort, driven by a shared passion for preserving the heritage building’s historical integrity and ensuring its continued relevance in the modern era. The restoration project aimed to breathe new life into the building while honouring its storied past.
Best Seniors/Aged Persons Multi Unit Development, $50m-$100m: Waterfront Cottesloe Redevelopment Project – Stage 1BC, Marine Parade
This project was acknowledged for the high-quality delivery of 56 Independent Living Units (ILUs) for the community.
Sitting adjacent to the restored and renovated MCL heritage building, in addition to the 56 ILUs, the facility also includes three commercial tenancy spaces, extensive external landscaped areas, plaza areas, a gymnasium, yoga studio, an ocean lounge, and a pool.
Despite facing workforce shortages and supply chain issues, the team overcame these challenges by leveraging a targeted approach to resourcing, programming, and sequencing.
Best Office Building, $50m-$100m: Westralia Square 2
Awarded Best Office Building at the awards, our Westralia Square 2 (WS2) project is a new hybrid Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and structural steel 12-storey tower, with 11,100m2 of PCA Premium grade office space. It is Western Australia’s first CLT steel hybrid structure, and has 5 Star Green Star and 5 Star NABERS Energy ratings.
The hybrid steel & CLT timber nature of construction was a new experience for the project team, who worked collaboratively with the design team and subcontractors to overcome elements which on a standard concrete structure would just be typical details.
The team also overcame the challenge of being in close proximity to surrounding structures and other occupied buildings, in order to deliver this project.
Congratulations to our teams and everyone involved, as well as all the other nominees acknowledged at the Master Builders Western Australia 2024 Excellence in Construction Awards.
