Built celebrates major construction milestone at Perth Film Studios

17 July 2024

Setting the scene for the future Perth Film Studios, Built proudly hosted Deputy Premier and Treasurer The Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA and Minister for Culture and the Arts The Hon. David Templeman MLA, to celebrate the installation of the first steel roofing structures.

The two prefabricated modules, spanning 40 metres and weighing 30 tonnes, form the framework for the roof over the first of four sound stages which are at the core of the studio complex now being built on the 16-hectare site.

“It’s really exciting to see the Perth Film Studios taking shape with our long-time goal for a world-class screen production facility here in WA becoming a reality,” said Treasurer Rita Saffioti.

“The studio complex will rival the best in Australia and help attract major productions from around Australia and the world, while boosting the business and employment opportunities for the local industry and the WA economy more broadly,” added the Treasurer.

The new world-class studios will feature four purpose-built sound stages as well as production offices, an art department, wardrobe, workshops, set storage, parking, and a 23,200 square metre backlot which is larger than the playing field at Optus Stadium.

“With the new facility featuring four sound stage studios providing the equivalent of 31 tennis courts of production space, the installation of the structural steel to the first sound stage marks a significant milestone for this project,” said Built’s Jon Stone, Director, WA.

Since commencing on site in January, the project has generated more than 200 jobs – with the project set to create a total of 600 direct and indirect jobs – with one-fifth of the workforce being apprentices or trainees.

“With over 34,000 working hours logged to date, Built is proud to be delivering the infrastructure that is creating new employment and training opportunities for the people of WA,” added Mr Stone.

Further jobs have also been created throughout the supply chain for local suppliers and skilled workers, including local structural steel supply and fabrication, offsite painting, concrete supply, and supply of bulk fill material.

The project is on track for completion in late 2025, with the studios expected to be open from early 2026.
