Building a Culture of Care During Mental Health Awareness Month
As we reflect on Mental Health Awareness Month we’re reminded of the importance of fostering meaningful conversations and ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need all year round.
At Built, health and wellbeing are central to our workplace culture as we strive to create more inclusive and supportive environments.
Throughout October, our Health and Wellbeing Department visited all our construction sites and offices across the country, to raise awareness and provide safe spaces for employees to discuss mental health openly and continuing their mission to break down stigma and promote wellbeing across the organisation.
“We are committed to cultivating a culture where care and support are integral to our daily operations. From onsite health initiatives to mental health resources, we ensure that our team has access to the tools and support they need to thrive both personally and professionally,” said Haydn Masters, Head of Health and Wellbeing at Built.
A cornerstone of our wellbeing initiatives is the Mental Health First Aid training, which equips our people with the skills to recognise early signs of mental health challenges and respond effectively. Facilitated by Rhys Painter, Health and Wellbeing Adviser, the program has certified over 100 employees nationwide as Mental Health First Aid Officers. These officers play a crucial role in offering initial, informal support to colleagues, helping to foster a workplace culture of care.
Given the unique pressures of the construction industry, where workers are twice as likely to experience mental health issues compared to other sectors, such programs are vital. Senior Project Engineer Xavier Gotch reflects on the importance of breaking down these barriers.
“In a male-dominated industry like ours, it’s often hard for men to talk about their emotions. This training gave us essential knowledge to recognise when someone might need help,” he said.
Complimenting these proactive initiatives, was the launch of our new Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Sonder, that offers 24/7 wellbeing and safety support. Available anytime and anywhere, Sonder ensures employees can access confidential support for personal or professional challenges – whether they are onsite or at home.
